CPAC welcomes NY-based photojournalist Ed Kashi to the gallery for a long-awaited opportunity to meet and learn from this master photographer. Participants will look at photographs, multimedia and short films to consider the range of tools and opportunities available at this moment for image makers. Kashi will use as examples his many personal projects, including his recent work on the Niger Delta for National Geographic and his seminal work on Aging in America.

Time will be spent learning about the personal history, goals in life, and photography of each participant, followed by group critiques and a free and wide ranging conversation. As with most of Ed Kashi’s work, the ultimate goal is to learn how to find a subject you are passionate about, document it in a compelling and unique visual style, and disseminate it effectively to influence people’s understanding and help write history.

The digital age is giving photographers and visual-media artists extraordinary new ways to tell stories with greater authorship and control.  This one-day workshop will help students develop their personal vision and unique styles. You are encouraged to share your work in an intimate session to learn about creating a personal project for publication, books, exhibitions and websites.

This is a unique opportunity to spend time with one of America’s foremost documentary photographers.

“Visual Storytelling with Passion and Purpose” is presented in conjunction with Ed Kashi’s exhibition “Eye Contact,” on view at CPAC February 17 – March 17, 2012. A short break for lunch is included in the schedule.

Along with numerous awards, including honors from Pictures of the Year International, World Press Foundation, Communication Arts, and American Photography, Kashi’s images have been published and exhibited worldwide, and his editorial assignments and personal projects have generated four books and numerous magazine stories, including several features for National Geographic magazine.

In 2009, powerHouse Books published Kashi’s book Three. Presented in a triptych format, this project draws upon Kashi’s vast supply of images created over 30 years searching for “visual connections, visual language, visual poetry of three.”
