FRAME BY FRAME

Afghanistan, 2015, 85 Minute Running Time
Language: English, Dari – English Subtitles

DIRECTOR: Alexandria Bombach, Mo Scarpelli
Cast: Farzana Wahidy, Massoud Hossaini, Najibullah Musafer, Wakil Kohsar

During the Taliban’s five-year reign in Afghanistan, taking photographs was a crime. This gripping documentary chronicles the country’s tumultuous history from the Soviet invasion in 1979 to the present, where four emerging photojournalists are “re-framing” the old narrative of their homeland by establishing a free press. Directors Alexandria Bombach and Mo Scarpelli introduce us to the photographers who are at the forefront of the new media: Najibullah Musafar, who teaches photography and believes photos capture a nation’s identity; Wakil Kohsar, who captures the faces of heroin addiction; Massoud Hossaini, whose photographs of a bombing at a religious ceremony won a Pulitzer Prize in 2012; and Farzana Wahidy, who brings women into the picture. Despite the dangerousness of their mission, these photographers continue to emphasize with their subjects and remain committed to showing the world the real Afghanistan while sending a message of hope.
