Digital Photography II:  Lightroom Digital Workflow Basics

Digital photographers capture an increasingly large number of images: learning how to process, edit and organize images is a necessary component of the digital photographer’s toolkit.  In this class you will learn the essential process of digital workflow, utilizing Adobe Lightroom.  This class will walk you through the process of how to download, organize and store your images in a way that will facilitate easy retrieval.  You will also learn how to edit and perform simple, but important corrections and adjustments, as well as how to export images in various formats in this photographer-friendly program.

Day 1:   Introduction to Lightroom.  Setting up a digital file system. Importing, rating and keywording images.  Practice uploading, rating and keywording your own images.  Practice searching using various criteria.

Day 2:  Review importing and searching.  Setting up and utilizing collection sets.  Backing up catalogs.  How to make your images stronger in-camera (for better post-production results).  Basic image editing in Develop mode.  Practice editing images.

Day 3:  Review student images.  More image editing skills.  Practice editing.

Day 4:  Review student images.  Exporting various file formats, basic slideshows, and creating books.  Putting it all together and next steps.  Final image editing practice.

Supplies: Students should come to class with a laptop computer with Adobe Lightroom 5 or CC installed (30-day free trial available from Adobe), a powercord for your computer, memory card(s) with images ready to be uploaded, a memory card reader (or your camera with a USB cord for uploading), and a mouse for your laptop (optional, but it’s easier to edit photos with a mouse).  Also, please bring pen and paper to take notes.
