08 May John Davenport
We’re happy to announce that John Davenport joined our darkroom faculty this Spring. John is a master fine-art printer specializing in large-format gelatin silver and alternative print-making processes. He has exhibited his work widely and is a long-standing member of the Edge Gallery collective in Denver. John is a former board member of CPAC and has taught classes for CPAC and Working with Artists for many years. Until last year (2011) he was the darkroom technician for Roach Photos in Denver.
“For many years I have worked in both 5”x7” large format and in Multiple images particularly Diptych. In 2005 I received as a gift a box of 5”x7” vintage glass plate negatives from an old Denver Portrait Studio. The glass plate negatives had taken on a beautiful patina caused by age and water damage. As they were the same format that I have been shooting for years it was only natural for me to pair my work with these images [as seen in the photo above]. “Size 8” is one in a series of images questioning “America’s Standard of Beauty”; for over 25,000 years full figured women such as this beautiful young woman have represented mankind’s ideal of beauty.”
