This intensive two-day workshop covers the basics of platinum/palladium (na2) printing as well as an introduction of the digital negative workflow. It is intended for the beginner platinum / palladium printer, the experienced historic process printer, or anyone wanting to turn digital image files or film negatives into digital negatives for any contact printing process.

Topics included in this workshop:

Day #1 – Digital Negative

  • The advantage and use of a digital negative.
  • Scanning film negatives and preparing digital image files.
  • Making digital negatives using Photoshop and Quad Tone RIP.
  • Creating a calibration curve for your digital negative output.

Day #2 – Platinum/Palladium Printing

  • Brief histories of the platinum / palladium print.
  • Paper choice and hand coating techniques.
  • Establishing your exposure time.

About the Instructor: Jeff’s interest in photography started in 1994. While fulfilling his artistic needs with canvas and oils Jeff decided to start photographing subject matter that he wanted to paint. About a year later Jeff developed his first roll of black and white film and since then he has never looked back.  Currently, Jeff works primarily with large format cameras printing in silver, platinum / palladium and wet plate collodion making black glass ambrotypes. After immersing himself deeply in the art of platinum / palladium printmaking Jeff has decided to share his knowledge and skills with others to share the beauty of creating this incredible medium. “It goes far beyond the final image, working with this printing process is art in itself and I wish to share this not only with my images but deep within the core of the process”. Jeff’s images have appeared in numerous juried venues and institutions including The Center for Fine Art Photography, The Center for Photographic Art, Colorado Photographic Arts Center, Black and White Spider Awards, PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris, Black and White Magazine, View Camera Magazine, as well as numerous juried art festivals.
